Hideo Kojima May Have Implied Why He And Konami Split
With Hideo Kojima now gone from Konami and re-establishing Kojima Productions as an independent developer, there is one question everyone wants answered: "What happened between the developer and the publisher?" Of course, we probably will never know as these break ups are always accompanied by a gag order, which is indeed the case here.
However, in a recent interview with The New Yorker, Kojima did talk more generally about what he doesn't like working under in development and…well, the connection of who he is talking about isn't that hard to infer. Kojima said:
In order to target the global market, the management behind the project needs to have a keen sense for what will work, and be willing to take risks. If you're only focussed on the profits immediately in front of you, the times will leave you behind. It becomes impossible to catch up again.
When working in big companies, especially Japanese companies, every little thing has to be approved beforehand, and you need paperwork to do anything. Now that I'm independent, I can do what I want with much more speed. I don't need to invest time in unnecessary presentations. I shoulder the risk.
I expect that is the closest we will get in the long term on Kojima talking about his Konami woes, due to his inability to talk about it, but it does give us some insight into how that relationship deteriorated.
