Shenmue 3 Creator Said He'd Like More Money
Shenmue 3 has had a pretty successful life so far. It was announced as a Kickstarter during Sony's E3 Press Conference, and then it went on to become the most funded game project ever on the platform. I've always held that the $6 million it garnered through crowd funding probably isn't enough to make a game with the vision I'm sure people want though, and that a lot of extra money will likely have to be found to do so.
It seems that creator Yu Suzuki is feeling that pinch at the moment. In an interview with Eurogamer, he explained that he actually is looking for more money now, and if he doesn't, it might well hurt the game's appearance.
Kickstarter's not the only source of money. There's also funding from Sony and Shibuya Productions. Before we started Kickstarter, we had goals set around the budget – so if we only got $6 million, we'd create Shenmue 3 based upon what we could do with that $6 million. We're still trying to gather funds. Obviously, the more money we have the more we can do. Even if we don't get as much budget as the previous games, we'll still make this game.
I could do with a bit more money! The game itself doesn't have to be gorgeous visually – a lot of the money these days goes into the graphics. If we perhaps compromise on the graphics and put more into the story, we can make a good game. The most important thing, to me, is that the game's interesting, and that it's something people want to play.
While I understand what Suzuki is saying here, and I absolutely do believe that Shenmue 3 doesn't have to have mind blowing graphics, it does seem when you have the most successful Kickstarted game ever, it could look like a kick in the teeth to those who backed you to say you didn't get enough. Either way, I hope the game gets the resources it needs. People have been waiting a very long time for this game.
