Virtual Console is Not Coming to the Nintendo Switch (But There is an Alternative)
Nintendo has confirmed that playing old games on the Nintendo Switch will come through the company's online subscription service, rather than being buyable from the Virtual Console brand.
The Virtual Console has been a great little thing on previous Nintendo devices. From the 3DS to the Wii and Wii U, the shop opened up Nintendo's considerable retro library, ready for playing on modern systems. Sadly, it hasn't come over for the Nintendo Switch yet, and now it looks like it might never (but there is certainly a replacement coming).
In a release about the Nintendo Switches' upcoming online subscription, it was revealed that 20 retro games will be playable at launch in a library for those who are part of the service. This will allow players to pick and choose what they want to play. This does, however, mean, the name 'Virtual Console' won't be coming over. Talking to Kotaku, a Nintendo spokesperson said:
There are currently no plans to bring classic games together under the Virtual Console banner as has been done on other Nintendo systems.
While the games are coming through subscription, it is alluded to that you will be able to pick them up individually at some point. The spokesperson continued by saying:
There are a variety of ways in which classic games from Nintendo and other publishers are made available on Nintendo Switch, such as through Nintendo Entertainment System – Nintendo Switch Online, Nintendo eShop or as packaged collections.
What we are lacking here is details, from what games will be available, when they old games will show up on the eshop and how we can expect the library to grow. At the end of the day, playing Super Mario World on the move is an enticing prospect. Hopefully, one way or the other, that experience can be catered too.
