9 New Images from Solo: A Star Wars Story

We got our reveal that Solo: A Star Wars Story would be on the cover of Entertainment Weekly today, but we also got nine new images and a bunch of new information with that reveal. Entertainment Weekly shared some new images from the movie along with some details and quotes from cast and crew talking about them. Let's take a look.

9 New Images from Solo: A Star Wars Story

First we have Han (Alden Ehrenreich) and Chewie (Joonas Suotamo) flying in the Falcon. Their relationship is going to be a key part of this movie, and writer Lawrence Kasdan says he joked about their "bromance" with his son with whom he co-wrote the script.

"To me, this is a love story between Han and Chewie," he says. "Their relationship has always been my favorite part of the saga, and the fact that only Han understands what Chewie is saying, I find a very funny possibility for comedy."

That doesn't mean these two are going to be best friends from get go. It's going to be work before Chewie and Han become the team we see in Episode IV.

"Wookiees have so many positive qualities," Lawrence Kasdan adds. "But what they don't do is make it easy for you to get in.

Next we have Ehrenreich posed with plenty of swagger. The movie is being pitched as a "film noir and Western with buddy comedy element smuggled inside". This movie takes place several years before Episode IV and Han is not the same person.

"I think the main thing that's different is that the Han we meet in this film is more of an idealist," Ehrenreich says. "He has certain dreams that he follows, and we watch how it affects him as those dreams meet new realities — realities that are harder and more challenging than he'd expected."

Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian seems to have stolen everyone's attention from the first teaser a few days ago. It's all people are talking about, and here is a new image of him playing the in-universe card game sabacc.

"Yeah, we are playing a game of sabacc," Glover says. " A lot of it, you know?"

Sabacc is the same game that Han played Lando for the Falcon, but it's unclear if that's the same game we're seeing in this image.

"We are getting a taste of that. How good is Lando? How good is Han?" Glover says.

Now time for some new characters. Qi'ra (Emilia Clarke) is our femme fatale and mystery woman. She might look elegant in this image, but that is a facade she is using just to survive in this universe. We don't know that much about her.

"She has a couple of guises, but essentially she is just fighting to stay alive," Clarke says. "If you've got a really glamorous lady in a really sordid environment, you kind of know the glamor is hiding a few rough roads," Clarke adds.

Rogue One was kind of a heist movie toward the end with the fight for the Death Star plans, but this image of a heist on a train looks like something out of an Ocean's movie. We know that Han and Chewie are going to be stealing something from a train known as the Conveyex, but we don't know what yet. That writing on the train won't give you any clues — EW translated the Aurebesh and it just says "Hitch Joint".

Next we have a new look at Tobias Beckett (Woody Harrelson). He's a small-time criminal looking to make it big after scoring this heist and will play a mentor to Han.

"He's a powerful criminal, but a free agent," says director Ron Howard. "Tobias Beckett really shapes Han more than anybody, as Han comes to believe that in a lawless time, he needs a moral code."

The Falcon looks very different on the inside and that is not a mistake. It also looks different on the outside, as seen in the next image.

So why does the Falcon look so different when this is a prequel? The nose being closed is one of the bigger ones that obvious. It's all intentional, according to director Ron Howard, who isn't giving anything away.

"I wonder what that could be?" Howard says coyly. "You'll have to see. The Falcon is a character in the movie, without a doubt. That machine is a defining factor in Han's future. Every aspect of this movie moves, shifts, and transforms in very interesting and yet plausible ways."

Next we have a droid played in motion capture by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, and this is the first time a woman has brought a central droid to life in a Star Wars movie. "She's got a more idiosyncratic personality than your typical droids. She's more human — which probably means more emotional and slightly less rigid." Her name is a 1337 joke, which makes me feel old.

Finally, we have some Mudtroopers on the planet of Mimban. Fans that didn't read any of the old Legends books won't know what this is, but Mimban played a major part in old Star Wars lore.

The planet was the setting of the 1978 novel Splinter of the Mind's Eye by Allan Dean Foster, which took place two years after the events of the original Star Wars and saw Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia stranded on the muddy planet while Darth Vader searched it for a Force relic known as the Kaiburr crystal.

It's another swamp planet with an atmosphere that has thunderstorms, so it's constantly overcast. It's the planet equivalent of the Pacific Northwest. The planet was featured in the animated show Clone Wars, but what significance it's going to have to the post-Disney lore is still unknown.

Summary: Han Solo and Chewbacca's adventures before joining the Rebellion, including their early encounters with Lando Calrissian.

Solo: A Star Wars Story, directed by Ron Howard, stars Alden Ehrenreich, Emilia Clarke, Donald Glover, Woody Harrelson, and Thandie Newton. It will be released May 25th.
