Ant-Man and the Wasp Will Be a Romantic Comedy, Claims Russian Film Site

The upcoming Marvel Studios Ant-Man and the Wasp will be a romantic comedy, according to a report from Russian film website Kinometro, which the American clickbait media is taking and running with on this slow news weekend.

The story comes via a single line in a report about upcoming films from a Russian film event which calls the movie "the first romkomom from Marvel." The news hasn't been backed up by any official source involved with Marvel or the movie, but hey, if we can't trust the Russians, who can we trust? What bad could possibly come from American clickbait websites blindly repeating things they heard from Russian media without doing any kind of investigation or fact-checking? Nothing bad that we can think of.

If it is true that Ant-Man and the Wasp is going to be a romantic comedy, it might seem slightly patronizing considering it's the first movie where a woman shares top billing with a man from Marvel. The film that follows Ant-Man and the Wasp, Captain Marvel, will be the first Marvel movie with a solo female lead. Prior to that, Marvel will have produced 20 movies with male leads or featuring male-focused ensemble casts: Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2, Thor, Captain America: The First Avenger, The Avengers, Iron Man 3, Thor: The Dark World, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Guardians of the Galaxy, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Ant-Man, Captain America: Civil War, Doctor Strange, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Thor: Ragnarok, Black Panther, and Avengers: Infinity War. None of those films have been romantic comedies.

If it is true that Ant-Man and the Wasp is a romantic comedy, one has to wonder where Russia was able to acquire this information. Was it passed to Russian intelligence from former national security advisor Michael Flynn, who recently pled guilty to lying to investigators and is now cooperating with special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into President Donald Trump and whether or not Trump's campaign colluded with Russia to hack the U.S. presidential election. Trump is good friends with Marvel Chairman Ike Perlmutter, who donated millions to Trump's campaign and frequently dines with the president at Mar-a-Lago. Flynn probably didn't leak top secret information about Marvel's upcoming movie to the Russians, and in fact there is absolutely no evidence to suggest he did, but it's theoretically possible is all we're saying. That's the world we live in.

Ant-Man and the Wasp is set to hit theaters on July 6th, 2018.
