Blizzcon 2014 – The Warcraft Sizzle Real
At Blizzcon this weekend, two stories above the main floor, there was a ball room turned into a 600 seat movie theater with an amazing Dolby Atmos sound system. Every half hour a new group would be let in and shown a collection of trailers and then lead out through a side door where movie props awaited.
The first trailer show was what they called the "sizzle" real for Universal and Legendary Pictures Warcraft that opens in March 2016. The very first shot you see is of Stormwind. If you play World of Warcraft, this is an amazing site. It looks real but at the same time you know its Stormwind from the game. We then flash through cuts of Orcs and Night Elves and Humans gearing up for war. We see the two main heroes Anduin Lothar and Durotan and we see the world we've been playing in for a decade. The trailer ends in the middle of a battle as we see a gryphon swooping down to attack an orc and as we cut to black the crowd gasps at the vicious attack and the cheers at what they've seen.
Then they show us something that the Comic Con crowd didn't get to see. A close in shot of Durotan talking to a female orc. We see the expression in his face. The worry in his eyes. This piece was meant to show us that they were getting the Orcs done right… and they are.
The other trailers were for Blizzard's upcoming video game releases. We saw an animation for Heroes of the Storm, their currently in Beta MOAB game. Then we saw a Pixar level animated short introducing us to the world of Overwatch. And finally an cinematic for the upcoming stand alone release of Starcraft II: Legacy of the Void.
My overall impression from the Warcraft movie trailer is… Wow… ever pun intended. This is World of Warcraft done right and even with out the video game ties it looks like an amazing fantasy / war epic.
And I have to give props to the Dobly Atmos folks who were able to turn a standard ballroom into an amazing surround sound theater. You guys are welcome to come by and do that at my house anytime.
Here are some images I took of the movie props they had set up just outside of the ballroom.
