Blood and Honey Director Responds to Steamboat Willie Horror Film

The director of Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey shares his thoughts on Steamboat Willie complications and why it's worth avoiding.

Article Summary

  • Director of Blood and Honey weighs in on adapting classic characters.
  • Steamboat Willie to face challenges as it enters public domain.
  • Quality over quantity important for sustainable film adaptations.
  • Mickey's Mouse Trap set to release; more Mickey horror on the way.

Just last year, the 2023 independent slasher film titled Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey became the first film to take on the popular Winnie-the-Pooh property after the 1926 Winnie-the-Pooh book entered the public domain. Steamboat Willie (featuring Disney's instantly recognizable character Mickey Mouse) will get the same treatment in a few months by reinventing the property as a gore-filled independent slasher flick from an entirely different production company. According to the Blood and Honey filmmaker, this could result in an uphill battle.

When discussing the complications with adapting a pre-existing character despite it now being in the public domain, the Winnie-The-Pooh: Blood and Honey director Rhys Frake-Waterfield admitted that he wanted to avoid that particular Disney dilemma, telling IndieWire, "People think it's an easy thing to grasp and just grab hold of, but there are big issues which I think they're not aware of. There are things which we had to deal with [Winnie the Pooh] behind the scenes that were quite big, and I think [the Steamboat Willie productions] might get a bit of a shock soon."

The director then explained his approach to IP adaptations: "I don't know if any of them [developing Steamboat Willie properties] are going to, you know, try to make them good. That getting repeated all the time, it won't have the same kind of hit. It doesn't have the same kind of longevity for what we're trying to do. I personally believe the only way that this becomes sustainable for us making films is to really focus on doing a select few, the ones we think are best, and making them have a really high quality."
