CW's Arrow: Today, Tomorrow And Beyond

arrowheaderAs I continue taking a look at the comic related television series this week, I turn my focus now onto the one that started the whole CWvers, Arrow.

This new season was supposed to go back to what the series does best, street level vigilantism. And, for the most part, it has. But where last season ended with everyone gone but Oliver Queen and Felicity Smoak, the roster filled up pretty quickly as the new season began. The edition of Wild Dog, Ragman, and Artemis along with the continued growth of Mr. Terrific changed the dynamic a lot. Green Arrow went from being leader and partner to mentor and teacher… not something he's good at.

The introduction of Prometheus seems like the type of villain that works well for the series, but the spent a chunk of the first episodes focused more on Tobias Church. Once the team start to come together, so did the season. But the "gone" people weren't gone long as John Diggle returned early on and Thea Queen has suited up a few times already.

The introduction of Vigilante is a nice touch, giving Oliver a look at himself from a few years back. I think I'm enjoying this aspect of the series more than the Prometheus storyline so far. I want to see what happens when Oliver discovers that Adrian Chase is the Vigilante… assuming the writers don't take a twist on that.

Prometheus has been a slow build, but now that he's started playing his cards and showing that he knows who the team is and Artemis' betrayal is out there, it's gotten interesting. They are pointing us at the son of one of the Hood's early targets, but I don't know if I buy that yet. Seems like that is too simple of a reveal. It needs to be something bigger. And with the twist as the end of the mid-season finale, that might be something really strange.

When the show returns on January 25th, we'll have to deal with Laurel Lance being back and alive. But from the preview that came out the other day, we know that this isn't the Laurel they lost. It's likely Black Siren from Earth-2. This opens up a lot of possibilities. Is she there to attack the team? Is she working with Prometheus? Will she be an enemy or a friend? It would be a way to bring back the Green Arrow / Black Canary relationship in a different way, bring Katie Cassidy back onto the series and give her the scream power without the technology. Plus, it's more torture for Quentin Lance and we know the writers love to do that.

If it is Earth-2 Laurel and she's working with Prometheus, then it opens up a new possible identity for him. Assuming it's not the guy's son, one of the popular theories is that it's Tommy Merlyn come back to life. Which would be dramatic, but what if instead of that… what if it's Robert Queen? The one from Earth-2 that goes on to become the Hood. During the last episode, Oliver was stunned because Prometheus did a move that he was taught. If Robert Queen of Earth-2 went through a similar journey as Oliver here… then he would've learned that move too. That would be an absolutely insane reveal.

As for the sixth season of Arrow, I think the show has gotten back on track this season. Team Arrow could be trimmed down and a little more focus on Oliver and less on the people around him would be nice. The Mayor by day / Vigilante by night angle could present a lot of interesting stories. One of the things I would love to see the series do is take page out of Denny O'Neil and Neal Adams playbooks and have Oliver hit the road for part of the season with someone. It could be Diggle, could be a new hero or it could be Black Canary if they're trying to turn Black Siren into the hero and the two want to find a connection. But overall, getting back to the roots of the series was the right call and they should continue that.
