David F. Sandberg Comments on the Shazam! Costume Changes
Shazam! director David F. Sandberg is one of the rare directors willing to comment on the behind-the-scenes parts of his movie. He's spent plenty of time on twitter, but he's also active over on Reddit. Recently there was a leaked picture from Shazam!, and someone commented about the costume. Sandberg jumped on to explain exactly what's going on with the tweaking of the suit.
Making suits is hard. Like painting a room you can look at little swatches all day but you won't really see the effect until it's done. The color of the finished suit didn't look quite as expected in some lights (particularly daylight) which is on me since I decided to change fabric very late in prep and there wasn't time for as many tests. I figured we'd just have to tweak it in post. The first image released though unfortunately didn't have any post production done to it. That was right as we were putting the trailer together. I figured since that image was out there perhaps we shouldn't stray too far from it in the trailer. Might be confusing.
This image is closer to what I'm going for, but it's all still a work in progress and we'll see where we end up. No images (or the trailer) have the finished bolt effect either (it's not going to be an extreme effect or anything but it's not just a simple glow).
Superhero fans want their costumes to be perfect right away but sometimes forget that these things take time. Sometimes the costume we see in images or even trailers isn't exactly the costume that will end up in the movie. While that should be obvious, for some it isn't. It sounds like Sandberg is really going out of his way to make sure the suit is perfect, and that's why he keeps tweaking it.
Summary: A boy is given the ability to become an adult superhero in times of need with a single magic word.
Shazam!, directed by David F. Sandberg, stars Zachary Levi, Mark Strong, Grace Fulton, Faithe Herman, Jack Dylan Grazer, and Asher Angel, and will be written by Henry Gayden and Darren Lemke. It will be released on April 5th, 2019.
