Deadpool 3: "Exactly What" Shawn Levy, Ryan Reynolds Hoped It Would Be

Deadpool 3 director Shawn Levy says that the film "is turning out to be exactly what Ryan [Reynolds] and I had hoped when we started off."

When Disney bought Fox, everyone knew the mutants were heading to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, all anyone could talk about was whether or not Deadpool would be making the transition as the R-rated anti-hero that he is. Fox even tried to do a PG-13 version of Deadpool, but the film didn't quite work out the way they wanted it to, mostly because editing something down after the fact instead of just writing to a rating would always be awkward. However, from day one, Marvel Studios has assured fans that Deadpool 3 would be a return to form for the character, and that meant keeping that R-rating.

This time, star Ryan Reynolds brought director Shawn Levy with him to work on the film after a couple of successful collaborations between the two. The film is hanging in limbo right now due to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA, and there are rumors it won't hit its release date, though that hasn't been confirmed by Marvel or Disney yet. Levy was recently interviewed by Variety and was asked if he thought his experience working on Deadpool 3 was going help him heading into his Star Wars film down the road.

"The experience that I'm currently having with Marvel on "Deadpool" is showing me firsthand that it is indeed really possible to feel empowered and personal about making a movie within a universe that is bigger than any one film," Levy said. "My "Deadpool" movie is turning out to be exactly what Ryan [Reynolds] and I had hoped when we started off. So I'm going into the development of my "Star Wars" movie with a similar optimism and faith that my instincts will be allowed to lead the way."

So it sounds like everyone involved with Deadpool 3 is very happy with how things are currently going. However, they are stuck until studios decide that paying actors livable wages and giving them control over their own likeness is worth investing in. Deadpool 3 currently has a May 3, 2024, release date, but unless the strike ends soon, probably before the end of the year, there is a good chance that it will move again. The only ones to blame are the studios for refusing to work with the unions and dragging this whole thing out.
