E.T. Sequel 'A Holiday Reunion' Just Debuted as a Commercial For Xfinity

E.T. is one of the most beloved films of all-time. That is not debatable. What is debatable is whether a sequel is necessary. Wonder no more, as internet company Xfinity has gone ahead and made one as a holiday commercial. Debuting this morning during the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and now online, the four minute short film sees E.T. reunite with Elliot, who now has a family all his own. Check it out below:

After 37 years, E.T. comes back to visit his friend, Elliott, for the holidays. During his stay, E.T. learns that Elliott now has a family of his own and that technology has completely changed on Earth since his last visit. Learn more at xfinity.com/ET

E.T. Sequel 'A Holiday Reunion' Just Debuted as a Commercial For Xfinity

Gosh, I have to say I am at a loss for words on this one. On one hand, it is kinda cool to see E.T. and the original Elliot, Henry Thomas, interacting again. The concept for the commercial is also a good one. Watch E.T. bond with Elliot's family! That would be the ideal set-up for a sequel film.

But to use E.T. to sell an internet company? That just feels so soulless and icky. Watching him use VR and a Xfinity connection to use the internet and such…oof. I get it: we are all connected, and E.T. connects people. Couldn't they have at least used a puppet? This version looks 100% cgi, and that sucks. I really honestly do not know how to feel about all of it. You can tell Xfinity is spooked about the response as well: they have the coments turned off on the video's You Tube page.
