Edgar Wright Won't See Ant-Man

For a time, director Edgar Wright was to sit in the director's chair of Marvel's Ant-Man, with friend and star Paul Rudd in the lead as Scott Lang, the thief turned superhero. However, due to creative differences (is it just me, or do we hear about 'creative differences' a lot more these days?) he left the project.

Well, it turns out that Wright really did wash his hands of the film then and there, as he has never seen Ant-Man and refuses to do so even to this day.

In a recent interview with Uproxx, Edgar Wright said,

"I haven't seen it and I haven't even seen the trailer," Wright revealed. "It would kind of be like asking me, 'Do you want to watch your ex-girlfriend have sex?' Like, 'No, I'm good.'"

That's a very colourful allegory, but I guess I kinda get it.

Now, given this modern age of Marvel movies being pretty much EVERYWHERE, one can imagine making such a stand in life can prove mildly difficult. Indeed, Edgar Wright once had a near miss with his almost Marvel baby.

"The closest I came to [watching Ant-Man] was that somebody sitting near me on a flight was watching it. And when I saw that the person sitting next to me was going to watch the movie, I thought, 'hmm, maybe I'm going to do some work on my laptop.'"

However, Wright will not be dragged into besmirching the project, no matter how hard anyone tries. In fact, he even saw Rudd in Captain America: Civil War, and Wright loved him in the Ant-Man role in that movie.

"I have zero regrets about not doing the movie. Zero. The only thing I regret is the time wasted, my time and [fellow writer/director] Joe Cornish's time wasted. That's all I regret, I'll never be pressed into kind of bad-mouthing it, because the truth of the matter is my friends are in it."

"Paul Rudd is a friend of mine and we're still very good friends. And in fact, I saw him in New York the other week and we had dinner and it was the first time we'd had a chance to properly sit down since that whole thing. And the one thing I'll say about that movie is I'm pleased that I got a writing credit on it, because it sort of makes up for having worked on the script for like eight years. Two is that I got my friend, Paul, a part in a major film. And I did say to Paul — he knows I haven't seen it — I said, 'You know, I haven't seen the movie, and I will never watch it. I did see you in Civil War, and you were the funniest bit.'"

Edgar Wright of course is doing the rounds at the moment promoting his latest movie, Baby Driver, which is out in cinemas in the UK this weekend, and in the US August 11, starring Ansel Elgort, Lily James, Kevin Spacey, Jon Bernthal, Elza Gonzalez, Jon Hamm and Jamie Foxx.
