The 'Ghost In The Shell' Home Release Won't Have Any Deleted Scenes

There are two type of filmmakers in this world; those that put the deleted scenes on the home release so audiences can see everything that was cut and those that decide the version on screen is good enough and should speak for itself. It appears that Ghost in the Shell director Rupert Sanders is a member of the latter camp. In an interview with Cinema Blend Sanders talked about why there won't be any deleted scenes on the home release.

To me, the belief is that there's no point in 'Deleted Scenes' if they don't work, on a Blu-ray. The film is the best version of the film. What the Blu-ray does magnificently is going behind the scenes.

Sanders believes that there is nothing gained from seeing scenes that didn't work and instead puts his focus on provided good behind-the-scenes footage.

We had a team of "Weta-ns" as we called them who were everywhere from inception to construction, to principal photography, and then for visual effects. Sometimes they're just a hose in the water, but these guys really went deep, and we created in concert, how we did this. A lot of very talented people put a lot of work into that — and it's really testament to the quality of those gifted filmmakers. And it's through so many departments of the incredible vehicles and wardrobes and graphic designers and application departments across the world.

The visuals were arguably the best part of Ghost in the Shell so a detailed look at how those came to be would be worth it for people who are really into special effects.

If you're into cinema it's so great. I love 'Making Of' films. The ones for Blade Runner and Star Wars have really inspired me as a filmmaker. I hope these will inspire people in a similar way.

Sanders believes a lot can be gained from learning what happened behind the scenes and he's proud of the work that was done on Ghost in the Shell. Too bad it couldn't find an audience. Or that the movie couldn't hold together.

Ghost in the Shell, directed by Rupert Sanders, stars Scarlett Johansson, Pilou Asbæk, Takeshi Kitano, Michael Pitt, and Chin Han. It will be will be available in 4K, 3D, standard Blu-ray and DVD on July 25th.
