It's no secret that Fox's X-Men film franchise was a monumental moment in superhero cinema, setting the bar for present-day comic book stories. Well, the earlier films, anyway. And while many were drawn to the first-gen cast of X-Men, the studio eventually changed it up and opted to partially reboot the franchise with prequel stories that felt very much separated — until it wasn't. Now, one of the stars of the first X-Men franchise is opening up about how he learned the studio would be moving in a different direction after the release of X-Men: The Last Stand.
Kelsey Grammer on Learning About the X-Men Prequel Recasting
During a recent installment of The Hollywood Reporter's Full Comedy Actor Roundtable, Kelsey Grammer revealed that he was partially aware of the looming prequel recast, explaining, "After I just played Beast, my days in Marvel, they came and said, 'We have the most wonderful next film planned… We're going to go back in time.' And so I suddenly have this sinking feeling of, 'Oh so, I won't be in it, so my performance as Beast will not be in it. That's what you're telling me.' Sure enough, it went back in time… I was gone."
As Grammer noted, after the release of X-Men: The Last Stand in 2006, Fox shifted to focus on the prequel entries until Grammer and other original X-Men stars returned for the 2014 entry titled X-Men: Days of Future Past, combining both versions into one shared narrative. After Disney obtained the rights to the X-Men universe and its large pool of mutant characters, it was largely believed that we wouldn't see any other iteration of the beloved characters outside of Professor Xavier's appearance in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. However, in 2023, the MCU released The Marvels, with a cameo that reintroduced Grammer as a multiverse variant of Beast, suggesting we'll see him again when Monica Rambeau's story continues.
With Deadpool & Wolverine coming next month, we're pretty certain that a few other former Fox X-Men characters will find their way into the MCU. Though, as of now, we're mostly left to speculate about who that could actually be.
