Jasmine Has a "Much Stronger Character Journey" in the Aladdin Remake Plus a New Image
A lot of people are very, very unsure about the upcoming live-action remake of Aladdin. There are plenty of people who are against it simply because it is a thing that exists and they don't want that. Other people are against it because the early footage of Will Smith as the Genie and he doesn't look that great. No matter how you swing it, this movie is shaping up to be divisive which, considering the hype for Beauty and the Beast in 2017, is surprising. We haven't seen that much of the movie yet or heard that much about what the main differences between the old and new version will be. Empire has a new image from the movie and also spoke to producer Dan Lin about the character of Jasmine.
"In the original movie, it felt like [Jasmine] didn't have as compelling a goal," producer Dan Lin tells Empire. "Her main aim was to find the love of her life. In this case, the romance is important, but she also wants to see more of Agrabah, and take more of a leadership role in ruling the city. Her character has a much stronger journey."
We should learn more about this remake within the next month or so, but it's going to be interesting to see how this one is received. It looks like Dumbo was going to be the divisive remake but thanks to the poor reception of that Genie footage, maybe that isn't the case after all.
