In the latest episode of DC's Legends of Tomorrow we not only got to meet the Justice Society of America but we also got to see just how bad a team the Legends are. It was more than just meeting the golden age characters, it was also about looking at themselves through heroes from the past. What it means to be a superhero then and now.
The episode started with the typical heroes fight trope and the Legends are definitely out classed by a team that works together. This show what the team is missing is a leader since they lost Rip Hunter. The JSA assume that Martin Stein is the leader because he is the oldest male, and Stein jumps at the chance to take the role but finds he's not good at it. But he does get to sing at a Nazi Night Club. But they do find their natural leader by who steps up with things fall apart… and that would be Sara Lance / White Canary.
The episode also started working on the chemistry between the team and their new members. Sara spends time trying to be protective of Nate Heywood, including learning he's a hemophiliac. And Vixen and Atom getting teamed up which includes her out right telling him he's not a superhero and only part of it is because his powers come from his suit. Which I think is ironic because her powers come from a necklace that she has taken away from her at one point.
I don't know if the commentary with Ray Palmer will lead to him figuring out how to use the shrinking without the suit or not, but his insecurities popped up a few times in season one, makes sense that they're still around in season two. Plus he gets his suit stolen next episode… that's not going to sit well with him I think.
As for Nate, they wouldn't let us know he was a hemophiliac unless they planned on using it. Which they did… he had internal bleeding that wouldn't stop forcing Palmer to use the super serum that Eobard Thawne gave the Nazis to save Nate. This will lead to Nate getting some superpowers next episode… and you can see a preview in the video below.
Now Thawne, or Reverse-Flash, has come back to get the amulet that he was trying to get from the Nazis and he kills Rex Tyler to prevent him from going to tell the Legends not to go back to 1942… which they did because he did…. does that mean he didn't find them and does that undo everything we saw in the first two episodes already? Time Travel is very convoluted… I may need a big chalk board to work this all out on.
It was nice to see the Justice Society, but we only really focused on Commander Steel and Vixen, so I hope we get more time with Stargirl, Doctor Midnight and Obsidian later… and since Lance Henriksen was cast as older Obsidian, I think we will.
