When you are a writer who is telling the story of time travelers, and if they control where and when they go, then you will eventually have to answer the question: "Why don't they go back in time and kill Hitler?" History's most reviled despot comes up because it's usually the litmus test for a characters morality. DC's Legends of Tomorrow did it with a twist. Instead of asking that specific question, they used a DC comics analogy for Hitler, Per Degaton, and asked if it meant saving Rip Hunter's family, should they kill him as a child.

The episode was so focused on answering the questions that some of the characters themselves brought up the Hitler question. And it took Mick Rory to flat out say that killing the kid wasn't being a hero. But the episode brought up two things that are keeping the show from being great. The first is, at the heart, is a story of a man trying to change history to save his family… but at what cost? Depending on when he takes Vandal Savage out, it could have repercussions far beyond the death of two people. Rip's quest, though it's one we can all understand, is at its core selfish.

The second flaw in the series is that our heroes have not had any real victories. They've gotten a team member killed, but we are 10 episodes in an they've accomplished nothing. The first five episodes were a failed attempt to kill Savage and then cleaning up the fall-out from it. Then two episodes that had nothing to do with Savage, followed by two episodes set in the 50's with weird monsters and the stop Savage then but it doesn't change the future so what did they really stop? And now there actions caused Per Degaton to kill his father sooner and speed up the release of the Armageddon Virus.

With only six episodes left, this team needs a win bad. But instead they are heading off to the old west to meet Jonah Hex and try to avoid a group of killers that are after them. And then they have to protect the younger versions of themselves the episode after. We do know now that episode 13 will introduce Savage's daughter… just not which one yet.

I enjoy the show and I'm happy that it's getting a second season. But so far this team of Legends seem more like the Keystone Kops… and I don't mean the ones from Keystone City. At least they got the 'Kill Hitler' question out of the way.
