Mamma Mia 3 Producer Shares an Update on the Next Film

One of the producers of the Mamma Mia franchise confirmed that a third film is still in talks and very likely getting made. Eventually.

We've already had two Mamma Mia films so far, with a lot of ABBA music and Meryl Streep — two things we're all for. However, there's also been talk of continuing the musical film series with a third installment, which might be coming sooner than later, according to one of the key producers of the franchise.

Mamma Mia Producers Promises a Third Entry "Will Happen"

During a recent conversation with Variety, Mamma Mia producer Judy Craymer tells the publication, "I am so hands-on with everything that I can only do so much. So the TV show has been a big priority. I'm sure [the third Mamma Mia movie] will happen. I'm in the privileged position that I have Universal Studios wanting to do it, who I love working with, and I have a storyline. It just always takes a certain amount of time with Mamma Mia. Bjorn and Benny always take a certain amount of convincing. I don't know how much more convincing they're gonna have because everybody wants another film. But they had an ABBA Voyage, and then they wanted a rest from ABBA staff. But it will happen. We've done the television show, and now maybe I'll focus on the movie. Maybe that'll be a second 25-year celebration."

When interviewed by Deadline earlier this year, Craymer told the publication that the next entry was in the "earliest stages" of development with an idea that could include the return of Streep. She added, "I don't want to over-egg it, but I know there's a trilogy there. There is a story there, and I do think Meryl should come back, and if the script is right, she would, I think, because she really loved playing Donna."

We're already two films in at this point, so why not round out a complete trilogy with Mamma Mia 3?
