Mark Strong In Talks To Join Shazam! As Villain
There were not a lot of good things about 2011's Green Lantern. In fact, there might have only been one good thing about that movie: Mark Strong being cast as Sinestro. Strong was wasted in the part, but it looks like we might be getting another chance to see him as a villain in a comic book movie. According to The Hollywood Reporter it's for the role of Dr. Thaddeus Sivana in Shazam!
As for his Shazam character, Thaddeus Sivana — Dr. Sivana, if you're nasty — is Shazam's longtime arch-nemesis, debuting alongside the hero in 1940's Whiz Comics No. 2. The archetypal mad scientist, Sivana has traditionally been portrayed as one of the smartest men alive, but one given to squandering his gifts on ridiculous inventions that no-one could understand, turning him bitter, twisted and eager to do the wrong thing as long as it helped him out. Unusually, he's often helped in his bad deeds by his family, which includes ex-wife Venus and children Magnificus, Beautia, Georgia and Thaddeus Jr. (Apparently, his genius didn't extend to naming children.)
The current rumors suggest that production for Shazam! is set to start in Feburary, so expect to see a lot of casting announcements between now and then. Strong is a fantastic actor, and we can hope he gets the chance to be a villain in a good comic book movie this time.
Shazam!, directed by David F. Sandberg, stars Zachary Levi, and will be written by Henry Gayden and Darren Lemke. It will be released on April 5th, 2019.
