Mickey Mouse Is Public Domain, So Here Comes A Bunch Of Horror Movies
It has only been two days, and already we have an abundance of Steamboat Willie Mickey Mouse horror films and video games on the way.
Article Summary
- Mickey Mouse enters public domain, sparking horror adaptations.
- In mere days, multiple Mickey Mouse horror projects emerge.
- Films and games twist Mickey's image into chilling narratives.
- Fandom split on seeing beloved icon in a dark new light.
In case you haven't heard, Mickey Mouse is in the public domain. Not even two days into 2024, we already have two movies, a short film, and a video game in development or released, and who knows how many more. All of the projects are horror, of course. The first had a trailer debut yesterday. Titled Mickey's Mouse Trap, it stars Sophie McIntosh, Callum Sywyk, Allegra Nocita, Ben Harris, Damir Kovic, Mackenzie Mills, Nick Biskupek and Simon Phillips. In that one, a 21-year-old and her friends are chased by a Mickey Mouse-masked killer through an amusement park. Imagine that; I wonder how they broke that story. It looks as good as you imagine.
Mickey Mouse Killing People Is Not As Fun As Winnie The Pooh
Another horror film, this one from The Mean One director Steven LaMorte, is also on the way. That one is just untitled as of now. "Steamboat Willie has brought joy to generations, but beneath that cheerful exterior lies a potential for pure, unhinged terror," LaMorte said in a press release we found on Variety. "It's a project I've been dreaming of, and I can't wait to unleash this twisted take on this beloved character to the world."
A nine-minute short, The Vanishing of S.S. Willie, was released to YouTube via Night Signal Entertainment as well. This one pretends to be a lost documentary about the disappearance of a missing ship from 1928, the S.S. Willie. And our friends at Bloody Disgusting have news about a new video game titled Infestation 88.
I get why everyone is having such a fun time with this, and I am sure by the end of my typing this sentence, four or five more projects will pop up. This is just the tip of the iceberg. Mickey Mouse, no matter the version, killing people will always make people laugh.
But it is just not as fun as when Winnie The Pooh: Blood and Honey was announced. It is too much, too fast people. Plus, as a huge Mickey fan, I don't want to see any of this. Make fun of me all you want, but when I go to the Disney Parks, I still get all wide-eyed and starstruck around the character. I am glad everyone is having fun, but for me, this is gross.
