Gavin Warren has accomplished much in his short career since his debut in 2017's Two Wongs Make a White at nine. Since then, he's done his share of TV and film, appearing in Universal's First Man (2018), Netflix dystopian series Daybreak, CBS's procedural NCIS: New Orleans, and making the most in his brief time on Fear the Walking Dead in the eighth and final season as Finch. While promoting his latest horror film, Night Swim, Warren spoke to Bleeding Cool about why he feels so comfortable in horror, working with director Bryce McGuire and co-stars Amélie Hoeferle, Kerry Condon, and Wyatt Russell, and his time on FTWD. The film follows a suburban family discovering their backyard swimming pool is haunted.
Night Swim: Why Gavin Warren Feels at Home in Horror
Bleeding Cool: What intrigued you about 'Night Swim?'
Warren: Well, I've never swam in a movie, and I love scary movies.
What was it like working with director Bryce McGuire on set?
He's awesome! He is so great at directing kids. He is also very positive to be around and super funny.
How do you break down your chemistry with your co-stars?
With Amelie, we cracked jokes a lot with each other and were like real brothers and sisters. With Kerry, she was very protective and made sure I was comfortable. She was like a real mom looking out for me. With Wyatt, we discussed sports and things I like to do.
Was a particular stunt or sequence in 'Night Swim' difficult for you?
I love stunts! I love swimming and had to learn techniques for holding my breath longer while acting like a rag doll. The stunt people taught me so much.
How do you compare being in the horror genre to your other work? Does being in 'Night Swim' differ from your other work?
My favorite genres of film and TV to act in are scary movies and drama. Scary movies are entertaining to see what's going on behind the scenes with make-up and stunts. I have been in another unreleased horror movie, which had a lot of special effects and stunts that I got to do. Other genre movies don't have as much going on behind the scenes.
When you joined the cast of Fear the Walking Dead in season 8, did you feel any pressure being part of such a giant franchise?
I didn't get too nervous. Of course, I was a bit worried when I arrived, but I felt comfortable quickly. The actors, crew, directors, and producers in FTWD were like a family.
Blumhouse & Universal's Night Swim is available in theaters.
