Yesterday, we got some big news concerning Warner Bros. Discovery. They signed a massive deal with Tom Cruise to develop some original and franchise theatrical properties. While it seemed like Warner Bros had a good year when you think of Barbie, this company still tried to write off another completed movie for tax purposes. Well, it turns out that Cruise wasn't the only big name that Warner Bros. will be working within 2024. According to Deadline, director Paul Thomas Anderson will be directing a new film with the studio this year. Anderson knew Warner Bros Picture Group co-chairs/CEOs Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy from when they worked with MGM, which reportedly helped foster this deal. Anderson has also already brought on some big names for this untitled movie, including Leonardo DiCaprio, Sean Penn, and Regina Hall.
Everything else about the film is being kept under wraps for now, but Deadline sources report that it " is a contemporary setting and it is the most commercial one PTA has attempted, with commensurate budget." It's being reported that these are the first of many big names that will soon be attached to this film, and while we know that production is set to start this year, we don't have a release date. Considering the director and the people already attached to this one, there is a good chance this will be an awards contender. If they wanted to make it for the 2024 awards season, that would give Anderson and everyone else less than a year to finish everything. People can turn around films very quickly, but rarely do good things come from rushed productions, even when you're under the guidance of a master.
