Saturday Night Live Writer Indefinitely Suspended For Controversial Barron Trump Tweet
Saturday Night Live writer Katie Rich has been indefinitely suspended after an uproar over a controversial tweet about Barron Trump, son of President Donald Trump. In the now-deleted tweet, Rich said, "Barron will be this country's first homeschool shooter." The outrage in response to the tweet led to calls for Rich, who writes for the Weekend Update segment on SNL, to be fired, and a petition calling for that has garnered more than 79,000 signatures. NBC has not commented on the suspension, but Deadline and other news outlets like The Washington Post are reporting that the suspension was immediate and indefinite.
Rich did not appear in the credits for Saturday's episode, and apologized via Twitter:
Honestly, we can't say we disagree with NBC's decision here. It would be incredibly irresponsible to give the kind of power that comes with writing for the nation's number one Saturday night sketch comedy show to a person who tweets offensive things so recklessly. After all, as The Department of Defense reported earlier today:
We should all probably keep an eye out for anyone else with a tendency to tweet offensive things with no regard for their repercussions. Can you think of anyone else who might fit this description?
