Star Wars, Valerian, and King Kong Make Shortlist for Visual Effects Oscar
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science have narrowed down the potential nominees in the category of Outstanding Visual Effects. This is one area of the Oscars that the big blockbusters have the best chance of winning. The list includes the big budget films like Blade Runner 2049, Alien Covenant, and the late entry Star Wars: The Last Jedi, but it also includes smaller films like Okja and The Shape of Water.
Here is the list as put together by the Academy's Visual Effects Branch executive committee:
Alien: Covenant
Blade Runner 2049
Dunkirk
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
Kong: Skull Island
Okja
The Shape of Water
Star Wars: The Last Jedi
Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planet
War for the Planet of the Apes
What happens next is that all members of the Visual Effects Branch can watch 10-minute excerpts from each of the films on the list on January 6th. After that, the group will vote to narrow the list down to the final five films, which will be unveiled on January 23rd. The 90th annual Oscars will be presented on Sunday, March 4th, 2018.
