Tony Lee Snags WWE Legend Kurt Angle (And Others) For Wrestling Comedy, In The Ring

kurtangless05For the last couple of years, comics (and now film/TV) writer Tony Lee has been touting a film in development with UK based Production company BoxFly called In The Ring. Co created with wrestlers (and comic writers) Christopher Daniels and Frankie 'Kaz' Kazarian (who will also serving as Executive Producers on the film), it seems to be a comedy in the style of Major League or Dodgeball, involving a small group of scrappy underdogs fighting the big bad that wants to destroy them. And it seems that BoxFly have been involved since October 2014, when Lee took one of the producers to a wrestling match to meet Daniels and Kazarian.

In July BoxFly released the Graphic Novel Also Known As at last years San Diego Comic Con, and Lee was seen deep in discussions for most of Friday night in the Hyatt Bar with BoxFly producer Haydn Pryce-Jenkins, there to promote Also Known As as both book and film, and (there as Ring Of Honor Tag team champions) Daniels and Kazarian.

After that, things quietened down – until today, when the Hollywood Reporter announced that WWE Legend and Gold Medallist Kurt Angle was attached to play one of the lead roles, with a ton of other wrestlers announced, including ex-WWE Woman's champion Mickie James, ECW Legend Tommy Dreamer, ex WWE superstars Ken Anderson, John Morrison, Chavo Guerro Jr and Kevin Kelly, ex TNA stars Nick 'Magnus' Aldis, Chad 'Gunner' Lail, Joey Ryan and Candice LeRae and current Ring Of Honor stars Jay Lethal, The Briscoe Brothers and Dalton Castle, the latter most likely gathered back in November when Lee posted this tweet –

A cursory google search by anyone shows how many of these names are big deals in the Indy and International wrestling scene. With a director and non-wrestling cast yet to be announced we're probably still early days here, but with a futuristic Robin Hood film being produced at The Hollywood Gang (300, The Departed), an episode of BBC One's Doctors being aired in May, the still as-unannounced Noel Clarke / Unstoppable Entertainment film in production later this year and the Also Known As film in development, Lee's 2017 is already starting well.

But of course we have to say that, or he'll get his big, muscled, spandex-wearing friends to come beat us up…
