Warner Bros. Addresses The LEGO Movie 2 Underperforming and Future Reboots

If there has been one big surprise so far in 2019 it was the fact that The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part did not do nearly as well people thought it would. The first one, also released in February, dominated the box office and went on to make $469 million at the worldwide box office. It eas reasonable to think the sequel would do just as well and it turned out that wasn't the case. The sequel, however, has only made $137 million at the worldwide box office. Now, this is a movie that could make its money back in home release very easily but as chief executive of film and TV Kevin Tsujihara told the LA Times everyone at Warner Bros. is a little confused as well.

It didn't do as well as tracking would've suggested, which was a little puzzling. The first movie was so fresh and so different. We need to continually rethink the experience, but the Lego brand is incredibly strong. On the game side, it's been an incredible franchise. We acquired [Lego video game maker] TT Games 12 years ago, and it really was a cornerstone of everything we've done in games.

There is also talk of reboots. There are plenty of things that Warner Bros. could bring back in some capacity. Tsujihara talked about some of the franchises they would like to explore more of in the future and the one that is coming back that he's excited about.

We have incredible franchises on the features side such as "The Matrix." We'd love to work with George Miller on furthering the "Mad Max" franchise. We feel there's a big opportunity on the Looney Tunes and Hanna-Barbera side as well. We need to invest and build those franchises up. We think that, despite their age, they still maintain a special place in kids' hearts.

I'm really excited about "Space Jam 2." We signed Bugs Bunny, and that was a tough negotiation [laughs]. We have a "Tom and Jerry" movie. We have a lot of stuff in development around those beloved characters on the movie side that we want to augment on the TV animation side.

We live in a world where Space Jam 2 is a real thing that is actually happening and people are excited about it. We've seen weirder things.

Summary: It's been five years since everything was awesome and the citizens are facing a huge new threat: LEGO DUPLO® invaders from outer space, wrecking everything faster than they can rebuild.

The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part, directed by Mike Mitchell and Trisha Gum, stars Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Banks, Channing Tatum, Tiffany Haddish, and Will Arnett. It's out now.
