Warner Bros. Discovery And Tom Cruise Are Teaming Up

In a press release put out today, it was announced that Tom Cruise is teaming up with Warner Bros. Discovery to develop and produce original and franchise theatrical films.

Article Summary

  • Tom Cruise partners with Warner Bros. Discovery for new film projects.
  • Paramount's relationship with Cruise wavers after recent hit and miss.
  • Warner Bros. aims to restore studio's glory days with Cruise's star power.
  • No specific projects announced yet, but collaboration begins this year.

A significant partnership in Hollywood seems to be coming to an end. Paramount Pictures and Tom Cruise have been working very successfully together for years, with massive films like Mission: Impossible and Top Gun: Maverick breaking records critically and commercially all over the place. However, Paramount and Mission: Impossible specifically became the COVID canary in the coal mine, being the first major production to shut down due to the virus and a production that kept getting shut down due to outbreaks. When Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning came out this summer and underperformed to the expectations it needed to for its larger budget from the virus, that likely hurt. There have been rumblings about Paramount possibly merging with Warner Bros. Discovery, but nothing has been made official. However, this new announcement will probably add fuel to that fire. In a press release put out today, it was announced that Cruise would be teaming up with Warner Bros. Discovery to produce and develop original and franchise theatrical films. The announcement was made by Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group's Co-Chairs and CEOs Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy, and Cruise and Cruise's production company will have offices on the Warner Bros. Lot in Burbank.

Said De Luca and Abdy, "We are thrilled to be working with Tom, an absolute legend in the film industry. Our vision, from day one, has been to rebuild this iconic studio to the heights of its glory days, and, in fact, when we first sat down with David Zaslav to talk about joining the Warner Bros. Discovery team, he said to us, 'We are on a mission to bring Warner Bros. back – we have the best resources, storytelling IP, and talent in the business – and we need to bring Tom Cruise back to Warner Bros!' Today, that becomes a reality and we are one step closer to achieving our ambition. We couldn't be more excited to welcome Tom back to Warner Bros. and look forward to bringing more of his genius to life on screen in the years ahead."

Said Cruise, "I have great respect and admiration for David, Pam, Mike, and the entire team at Warner Bros. Discovery and their commitment to movies, movie fans, and the theatrical experience. I look forward to making great movies together!"

At the moment, there aren't any announced projects that are part of this partnership, but they say that it will be starting this year. Cruise still has one more Mission: Impossible movie at Paramount and a movie that will quite literally shoot him into space with Universal. Cruise has worked with Warner Bros. Discovery on many projects before, including the fantastically underrated Edge of Tomorrow. Maybe now that sequel can finally happen. However, what does this mean for Paramount? Aside from the horror division, it seems like Cruise was a large part of the reason Paramount was keeping the lights on. We'll have to see how all of this plays out in the coming months.
