What We Know About "Sekaiichi Hatsukoi (World's Greatest First Love)"
The anime series Sekaiichi Hatsukoi (World's Greatest First Love) has become one of the most beloved romance series in Japan, in addition to being one of the only that centers on LGBTQ relationships. After two seasons and a film, the manga-based series has found an audience that appreciates the necessity of more inclusive relationships, and now we are returning to the title with Sekaiichi Hatsukoi ~Propose-Hen~ (The World's Greatest First Love: Proposal Arc).
The new anime will be coming to theatres in Japan in February 2020, with the main catalyst for returning being a proposal between franchise leads Ritsu Onodera and Masamune Takano. For those who need a refresher or are just discovering Sekaiichi Hatsukoi, the title follows Ritsu as a manga editor whose editor-in-chief Takano is a former high school crush. There's a lot of the romantic turmoil that these genre series and films tend to follow, but the franchise also explores several other unique stories about couples, individuals, and unrequited love.
The series came to fruition in 2006 and has achieved over a decade of notoriety, something that other LGBTQ centric series aren't always able to attain. Because of the expansive cast of characters, there is plenty of room to focus on different struggles and successes, some of which deal with struggling with one's sexuality or coming to terms with fighting for what you want and taking risks.
Luckily the new visuals paired with a brief teaser trailer depict each couple we've come to appreciate — meaning that everyone is accounted for in Proposal Arc. It's been several years since we were able to check in on each character, but this new film event promises everything we could hope for, and the fact that it's so close to Valentine's Day means we'll be witnessing more love than heartbreak (hopefully…)
At the very least, we can seemingly believe that we'll be seeing the titled proposal between Ritsu and Takano, but it's the confirmation that everyone else returning that makes this so exciting for Sekaiichi fans.
