German Network Airs Twin Peaks Episode Early, Vortex Fields Blamed

In a move that could either make the late, great (and top-half-of-his-head-missing) William Hastings (Matthew Lillard) proud or be a page out of a David Lynch-approved viral marketing campaign, German network Sky Deutschland confirmed that it had broadcast an upcoming episode of Twin Peaks: The Return a week early.

Standing as one of Europe's largest pay TV platforms, Sky Deutschland aired Part 14: We are like the dreamer on Monday instead of the scheduled Part 13: What story is that, Charlie?, gaining the attention and ire of viewers who quickly realized the mistake. Showtime programming distributor CBS Studios International confirmed it knew of the error, but offered no further comment.

Sky Deutschland released the following statement to Variety:

"Due to an accidently wrong labeling of the broadcasting file of a new episode of 'Twin Peaks,' episode 14 instead of 13 was available on Sky On Demand in Germany for a short period of time this morning. As soon as we got notice, the episode was removed. We apologize for the inconvenience and are working on making the correct episode available for our customers as soon as possible tonight."

Though Sky Deutschland stated that Part 14 wasn't available for long and was removed late Monday night, fans have already taken to websites and social media to share images and other spoilers from the episode. Interestingly enough, in a case of "if a an episode gets broadcast early but no one's there to torrent it, did it really happen," there currently doesn't appear to be any questionable (illegal) copies floating around the inter-tubes. Strictly for the sake of the integrity of this article, this reporter can verify first-hand that there's nothing out there…yet.

Lynch's third season of his and Mark Frost's mystery-thriller is being rolled out in 18 parts that are sent at the same time to Sky in Italy, the U.K., and Germany as it is to Showtime in the United States, resulting in the programming screw-up. For their part, Sky Deutschland acknowledged the mistake after removing the episode with a message that read, "Something has gone wrong."

Which itself sounds like an episode of Twin Peaks. Creepy.
