Will Doctor Strange Be A Horror Movie?
In an interview with Empire Magazine, Kevin Feige talked about all things Marvel Studios. But at the very end of the interview he was asked if the hiring of Scott Derrickson who is mainly know for Horror meant that Doctor Strange would be a horror movie. This is how Feige responded:
I would say you can certainly look at the past work of the filmmakers we hire as a bit of an indication for the tone of the movie, but not necessary everything. The Russos, who are well known for their sitcoms, there is nothing sitcom about The Winter Soldier! No, I wouldn't say just because he has only done horror movies means that Doctor Strange is going to be a horror movie. It means he is a talented filmmaker who we think could add something unique and very fresh to the particular franchise. But there could be scary moments. There are scary moments in all our movies! There are some scary people that Strange has to deal with, I will say.
Derrickson does have a strong horror themed resume as a director with movies like: Hellraiser: Inferno, The Exorcism Of Emily Rose, Sinister and Deliver Us From Evil. And if you look at villains like The Dreaded Dormammu, Mephisto, Lilith, Nightmare and Satannish you can see this movie going in a very dark direction if Marvel chooses.
But with a writing team of Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer, who have done Sahara, Dylan Dog: Dead Of Night and Conan The Barbarian, I would expect it to be a good mix of horror beats and action scenes.
I would expect to hear more about this movie, maybe even casting news, this week at San Diego Comic Con.
