How Moving Marvel's Agents of SHIELD to Summer 2019 Solves the Infinity War Issue

It came down to the wire for Marvel's Agents of SHIELD as ABC renewed the series for a 13-episode sixth season. And for anyone following along who has seen Avengers: Infinity War, the question became: just how will the television series reflect the ending of the film? And the simple answer now is… they won't have to. ABC announced today that season 6 will be held until summer of 2019 and that it's not being looked at as a final season. Potential spoilers ahead.

ABC President of Entertainment, Channing Dungy, spoke at their Upfronts today in Manhattan and said of the series:

I feel the season we just had was creatively the strongest yet. We don't plan [season six] as a final season. The show has a loyal passionate base. It does incredibly well in delayed viewing. By putting it on the summer we feel we can super-serve the show's audience and possibly have it on the air longer.

This is great news for fans, who seem to agree with Dungy that the series has been getting better over the last two seasons. The writers on the show were working with the idea that the season 5 finale, which airs Friday night, should work as a series finale as well, just in case. And the last four episodes of the season are said to be running parallel with the latest Avengers movie, meaning that the season would wrap up just before the final moments of the film. But when the renewal was announced, folks wondered how the show would deal with half of the universe being wiped out of existence thanks to Thanos. But with the delayed start to season 6 coming after the next Avengers film in May of 2019, the show can pretty much ignore it and react to whatever the new environment is created at the end of that film.

Kind of a win-win all the way around.
