Astrid & Lilly Season 1 Episode 6 Review: Toenails & Egos Run Rampant
SYFY's Astrid & Lilly Save The World aired its sixth episode, "Toenail", and this monster was not only fun and unique but it also progressed plenty of plot points along the way. Fair warning of potential spoilers ahead for the fifth episode of the new series so consider this a fair warning.
This week's monster is one that gives others large enough egos that it could literally blow their minds, but he's also known as Kevin. This vapor-like monster needed a host and it chose Principal Varshidi, which ended up being a perfect character choice for that to be the individual in need of a monster exorcism of sorts. His poor first victim ended up being Mark Truman, who turned red in the face, got a big ego, and his head exploded right then and there in the locker room. I'll tell you all…I was quite shocked but I loved the free expression of gore in this episode at that moment. I didn't initially love the first conversation between Sparrow and Astrid though, mainly because I felt bad for and upset with Astrid all at once. It's awesome to see her character go through these moments, we can't always have a hundred percent of love for a character in every moment because they make mistakes or lack specific initiative and that's some good writing.
While Kevin/Varshidi attempts to convince worried teachers that Truman is fine (although his splattered brain matter would say otherwise), we get to see a glimpse at Candace's character develop as she reveals more of her troubles to Lilly and even later to Eggs during a library study session. Poor Candace gets a double lack of support, from Tate and her mom, Christine. Revealing she needs a certain Biology grade in order to continue the play or else she has to quit based on her mother's orders, Candace is given a tip to go and see Eggs to help her study after Lilly luckily convinces him to give it a go. Eggs was a real sweetheart for helping even if reluctant.
Astrid & Lilly Save The World continues to present a complex person in Brutus' character even when the moments with him on screen are short or few. Often having a similar organizational method like Brutus, not going to lie I felt attacked yet seen. I love his character so much and each time he brings it his all, especially with his conversations with Astrid & Lilly. The dynamic between those three is fantastic. Brutus is like that parent that would throw a Band-Aid across the room at their child, helpful yet hilariously distant at times.
It's truly great seeing Candace handle situations now, such as breaking up with Tate, in a manner that gives her power back to her compared to what her mom seems to be doing. Initially, Candace said something along the lines of, "it's easier to give them what they want", speaking about expectations on her and Tate's relationship. But I think it has a lot more to do with that character's life, as well as the relationship because it's something instilled in her by her environment and her mom that she has to take time to unlearn. Speaking of Christine, she's got competition with Tom for most annoying, but then again poor Tom at the end of this episode where he finally gets that basement reservation. Christine looks like the type of woman who would argue with a minimum wage retail employee over a coupon that is expired. While Christine is off being annoyed with Tom and such, Tate is showing growth but I don't think he ever realized how much he wasn't connecting in his relationship with Candace. She found ease in talking to Eggs and had a profound realization that was truly freeing to witness from a character I initially loathed.
@astridlillyshow No shame, just vibes on this set…✌️ #astridandlillysavetheworld #astridandlilly #syfy #setlife #actress #tv
Astrid & Lilly Save The World surprised me with how hilariously long it took for Valerie to get approached by the monster and when it did it had no success because she was in a deep slump from not getting her wanted part in the play. She ended up being a great help to Astrid and Lilly with subduing Kevin. When Lilly took off Varshidi's shoe and sock, I almost screamed, you know that he was like that way before Kevin took hold of him. We get a big piece of info while our favorite monster-hunters exorcise Kevin, there's a big boss-style monster out there called "The Guardian" who based on connecting the dots must be our creepy-fingered church basement dweller. It'll be exciting to see how Astrid & Lilly bring together what they've seen and know as this force and its origin become clearer. Let me know your thoughts about this episode in the comments below!
