Supergirl Season 3: Sam Starts To Look Into Her Past For Answers
Tonight's episode of Supergirl is called 'Wake Up' and seems to refer to the discovery of two characters inside of the alien ship found in the water just outside of National City. But it also might be a reference to Samantha Arias (Odette Annable) getting closer to discovering her true nature as Reign. The episode introduces us to Patty Aria (Betty Buckley), Samantha's adopted mother.
The scene tells us quite a bit about Sam's background. Besides being adopted, she became pregnant as a teenager and was kicked out of the house because of it. She's never taken her daughter Ruby (Emma Tremblay) to meet her adopted grandmother, and with the passive-aggressive nature of their conversation, you can't really blame Sam for that.
Buckley's casting was announced a few months back. The 70-year-old Tony Award winner has been a regular on stage and screen for almost 50 years. She's performed in in such diverse productions as 1776, Sunset Blvd and Arsenic and Old Lace. On film she appeared in Carrie, Frantic, Wyatt Earp and Split among many other roles and on TV her longest run was on 102 episodes of Eight Is Enough but also appeared on series like L.A. Law, Cagney & Lacey, OZ, Monk, Without A Trace, Pretty Little Liars and The Leftovers. She's also put out 17 solo albums and participated in nine musical cast recordings.
Supergirl airs tonight at 8 p.m. ET on the CW.
