Halloween: Two Years Later, Is The TV Series We Were Promised Dead?

Is the Halloween TV series officially dead? It was initially announced in 2023, but we haven't heard much about it since then.

Article Summary

  • Two years after its announcement, the Halloween TV series seems to have stalled with few updates.
  • The show was set to focus on the aftermath of the original 1978 film.
  • Marc Helwig, the main champion for the series at Miramax, quietly left the company this year.
  • An anthology approach, inspired by Halloween 3, could revive the franchise if handled boldly.

"Halloween" fans were…excited way back in 2023 when it was reported that Trancas International Films had sold the domestic rights to Miramax to make a television show based on the popular franchise that, for the most part, focuses on slasher Michael Myers and the terror he reigns over his hometown of Haddonfield. Things went silent for a bit before we found out that the plan was to focus the show around the events of the original film and the residents of Haddonfield, which left many people unexcited. The person in charge of the project was Marc Helwig, an executive at Miramax, and this was a passion project for him. Well, some news that flew under the radar a bit, Helwig left Miramax near the beginning of the year.

Halloween Could Work As A TV Show If They Want To Be Brave About It

What does that mean for the Halloween TV show? Well, since that report about where Miramax wanted to take the show, there has not been a peep. Helwig, the show's champion, has left the company. And when people thought last month that we were finally getting some news on the show, we instead got some underwhelming news that we are getting a Halloween video game. Guess where in the timeline it is set?

Michael Myers in Halloween (2018)

My guess is that, and rightly so, they had a hard time finding a way into the story of that fateful night in 1978, and they just shrugged, and that was it once Helwig left Miramax. As much as I love Michael Myers and his adventures, there is a real opportunity here to take the franchise in the direction John Carpenter wanted it to go all those years ago and make this an anthology series. Do eight episodes a season, and sure, one can be devoted to Michael, but make the rest stories of Halloween and get some of the best up-and-coming names in horror to do them. This is not rocket science. The best part is that it wouldn't feel like they are just slapping the logo on a series to use the IP. There is precedent because of Halloween 3: Season Of The Witch. It is possible; they have to be brave enough to say that they are making Michael put his knife down and trust that the audience will be there.
