HBO Officially Orders Game of Thrones Prequel Series Pilot
Word just came down that HBO has officially put the order out for a Game of Thrones prequel series pilot. The show will obviously air sometime after the series finale.
Entertainment Weekly reports that Jane Goldman (Kingsman: The Secret Service, X-Men: First Class, Kick-Ass) and author George R.R. Martin are writing the prequel series, and an official series description has surfaced as well.
"Taking place thousands of years before the events of Game of Thrones, the series chronicles the world's descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. And only one thing is for sure: from the horrifying secrets of Westeros's history to the true origin of the white walkers, the mysteries of the East, to the Starks of legend … it's not the story we think we know."
While this is not a greenlight order for the series in general, this is a pilot order that could possibly result in a full-fledged series.
This ties into previous reports and public plans from the cable network that the world of Westeros is indeed a rich place to pull from for inspiration and additional stories.
Game of Thrones returns next year for its eighth and final season on HBO, doing what book series creator Martin hasn't done yet: completing the story.
