Hot Pink: Sarah Michelle Gellar YA Pilot Not Moving Forward at Amazon

Amazon Studios has passed on the Sarah Michelle Gellar young adult series in Hot Pink from Annapurna Pictures that co-produced with the streamer, though Deadline Hollywood reports that the project might get shopped around for a new home. The TV adaptation comes courtesy of Elisabeth Holm in a biting coming-of-age comedy loosely based on Elana K. Arnold's novel What Girls Are Made Of, which was a National Book Award finalist.

The pilot also starred Nina Bloomgarden, David Iacono, Mimi Davila, Dana Donnelly, and Myra Molloy. Holm, Rebecca Green, Sue Naegle, and Annapurna's Ali Krug serve as executive producers with director Desiree Akhavan, In the synopsis for Arnold's What Girls Are Made Of: "When Nina Faye was fourteen, her mother told her there was no such thing as unconditional love. Nina believed her. Now she'll do anything for the boy she loves, to prove she's worthy of him. But when he breaks up with her, Nina is lost. What is she if not a girlfriend? What is she made of? Broken-hearted, Nina tries to figure out what the conditions of love are."

Gellar, best known for her role as the title character in the TV adaption of Buffy: The Vampire Slayer, has been more active in voiceover roles starring in Netflix's animated series Masters of the Universe: Revelation. She's also made recurring appearances on her Buffy co-star Seth Green's stop-motion series Robot Chicken for Adult Swim, made a memorable turn as the villainous Seventh Sister on the Disney animated series Star Wars Rebels, and had guest spots on FOX shows American Dad! and The Simpsons. The actress makes the occasional appearance in live-action appearing as herself on The Big Bang Theory, reprised her role as Kathryn Merteuil in the made-for-TV movie Cruel Intentions in 2016 that acts as a sequel to the theatrical 1999 film.
