New Year's Rockin' Eve: Green Day Calls Out Trump, MAGA in New Lyric
Green Day changed a lyric to "American Idiot" during ABC's New Year’s Rockin’ Eve that we're sure won't make Trump's MAGA supporters happy.
As we're writing this, the Ryan Seacrest-hosted 52nd edition of ABC's Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve with Ryan Seacrest 2024 is currently in the middle of its 5-1/2 hours of music performances, guests, and drop-in looks at New Year's celebrations around the globe. But we would be remiss if we didn't point out a great moment during one of the performances – and it came courtesy of Green Day. During their performance from the West Coast, the rock band launched into the title track from its 2004 album, American Idiot – but we're not exactly sure too many Donald Trump fans were too thrilled. Because instead of the original line, "I'm not a part of a redneck agenda," lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong update it to, "I'm not a part of the MAGA agenda." Of course, "MAGA" represents Trump & his worshippers' belief that they can "Make America Great Again" (MAGA) by bringing it back to a time that was restrictive & oppressive to anyone who wasn't a white, straight male.
Here's a look at the official clip of Green Day's performance that was released by ABC earlier tonight, followed by a look at the portion of the song when Armstrong changed the lyrics to take a direct shot across the bow of Trump and his worshippers (courtesy of The Tennessee Holler). Following that, we have a look back at the original music video for the single – because you can never hear that song too many times:
