Jeb Bush Finally Wins Something… With Help From Derek Jeter
A group led by former Florida Governor Jeb Bush and former Yankee Derek Jeter has won the auction for the Miami Marlins. Their bid, according to Bloomberg, was $1.3 billion… just narrowly beating out the combined effort of the Bleeding Cool writing staff… but the contract isn't signed yet.
The team is being sold by N.Y. based art dealer Jeffrey Loria who bought the team in 2002 for a $158 million… which is a pretty good return on investment in 15 years.
All ownership change must be approved by MLB, but with it being the former Governor and brother of President George W. Bush who used to own the Texas Rangers, the odds are the approval would happen without a problem.
The Marlins comes with a relatively new ball park which opened in 2012, but a sparse fan base that averages just over 24,000 per game. That's roughly 24th out of 30 teams. The stadium doesn't have a naming rights deal… Bleeding Cool Ball Park has a nice ring to it… and it is hosting the All-Star game this year. Their current television deal with local Fox affiliate is good until 2020 but can be renegotiated. Currently the team gets about $20 million a year from the deal, which is the lowest in MLB.
