NFL Late Games: The Rest Of Sunday's Week 2 Matches

We're only in week two, and this has already proved to be an interesting season. Teams that shone in week one returned to Earth while teams that struggled finally got things going. In truth, after two weeks a lot of NFL teams are exactly what we though they were, you know, like Dennis Green said about the Chicago Bears in his classic meltdown:

Yesterday, I covered the early games, so here are some quick thought on the five afternoon/evening matches that rounded out the Sunday.

No one expected the San Francisco 49ers to be good this year with a new coach and a stop-gap quarterback. Back-to-back losses aren't surprising. But what was surprising in the Seattle Seahawks 12-9 victory over the Niners was the fact that the Seahawk's offense seems to be completely inept. Nine and 12 points are not the scores this offense was expected to put up.

The Washington Redskins' victory over the Los Angeles Rams showed that both teams are about even. The Redskins are better than their week one loss, and the Rams aren't quite as together as their 46-9 opening win over the Colts would lead people to believe. Jared Goff is improving and can be a good quarterback of the future, but he still has a ways to go, and Kirk Cousins still deserves to get paid.

The game that just reinforced what week one showed us and what we thought in the preseason: the Oakland Raiders are really good this year, and the New York Jets are really bad. The 45-20 Raiders victory just showed that they could use some work on their defense still.

There were some that questioned bringing Jay Cutler in after Ryan Tannehill when down. But when the Miami Dolphins got a win after having a forced week one bye, it was clear the team made the right choice. Cutler was already familiar with the offense, which allowed him to jump in quickly. The San Diego Chargers, on the other hand, are now 0-2 in a division with three juggernauts at 2-0. They need to right the ship quickly or they'll be too far back to care.

The final game of the evening promised to be a good one, with Matt Ryan and the Atlanta Falcons taking on Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers. The game seemed to be one side until the Packers started making a comeback, which had to make people think of the Super Bowl collapse against the Patriots. But the Falcons hung on to win, which I think will help the team's confidence far more than had it just been a blowout.

There is one last game this week: the Monday Night matchup pitting the Detroit Lions against the New York Giants. The Lions came out, well, like lions in week one, while the Giants were anything but. Hard to tell if tonight's game will bring the two closer together or continue those trends. I can't see Eli Manning and his team not getting it together some. And I think Matthew Stafford may finally have the team around him to succeed, but just how far he can take them remains to be seen.
