Star Trek: Patrick Stewart Reveals Picard Film Script in Development

It seems like Star Trek might not be done with Sir Patrick Stewart's Jean-Luc Picard just yet despite the definitive perfect final shot of the original The Next Generation crew playing poker after a long, hard-fought battle against the Borg, presumably for the final time. While there are seeds of some form of continuation, which Picard's final season showrunner Terry Matalas tentatively calls his follow-up series Star Trek: Legacy, Paramount hasn't committed anything yet. Among the seeds include the new captain of the U.S.S. Enterprise-G in Jeri Ryan's Seven of Nine along with Michelle Hurd's Cmdr. Raffi Musiker and Ed Speleers' Ensign Jack Crusher (who might have a new regular visitor in John de Lancie's Q) set ready to go on new adventures at space dock. The other is the hopes of Picard film, which has been on the mind of Stewart since the series finale in 2023. Both scenarios also open the door for Stewart's TNG co-stars to retain, as he explained in his appearance on Josh Horowitz's Happy Sad Confused podcast.
The TNG films produced four which includes The Original Series crossover film in 1994's Generations. This is considerably less than the TOS films that wrapped with their full cast in 1991's Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. The cinematic end is stuck at the fourth film of the Kelvin universe timeline, which operates as a soft reboot of the TOS characters with no certain future in sight. Internally, the only film in development on the franchise side is the Section 31 project, with Michelle Yeoh returning to reprise her role as the mirror-verse's Emperor Georgiou.
"After we finished recording our seven seasons of 'Next Generation,' we made four Star Trek movies of varying qualities, the best one being 'First Contact', directed by Jonathan Frakes," Stewart said, reflecting on his crew's cinematic past. "He was one of the people who had the most influence on me on the show because of his experience and his understanding of the complexities and how bringing different qualities onto the stage was very, very important in diversity and change." The star revealed offering a glimmer of hope to see Jean-Luc & company. "So it's an ongoing procedure for me. I heard only last night about a script that is being written, but written specifically with the actor, Patrick [Stewart], to play in it. And I've been told to expect to receive it within a week or so. I'm so excited because it sounds like the kind of project where the experimentation that I want to do will be essential for this kind of material. It's good at 83…" The Jean-Luc in Picard found himself out of favor with Starfleet in season one after the disastrous Federation-led evacuation of Romulus, originally portrayed in the 2009 J. J.
