Supergirl Season 3: Emotional Issues and the Season Finale Title
Last night's episode of Supergirl was an emotional one for many of the characters. Issues that have long been put aside came back up and the writers were working from experience when dealing with the fate of M'yrnn J'onzz (Carl Lumbly). Plus the season finale title has been revealed, so spoilers ahead.
In an interview with TVLine, executive producer Robert Rovner talked about some of the big emotional beats starting off with the clearing of the air between Kara (Melissa Benoist) and Mon-El (Chris Wood) and why that was important for them to move forward:
The way [Kara and Mon-El's] relationship ended in Season 2, they never really had a chance to break up. Things that might have been said under other circumstances, they didn't have the opportunity to say. We all felt it was important for Kara to get everything off her chest in order for them to move forward, [to start] a new friendship on a clean slate.
And then he talked about how M'yrnn having dementia and J'onn (David Harewood) having to become the caregiver is very personal to the writers as a good number of them have had to deal with that situation in their own life… minus the Martian psychic abilities.
A lot of us in the writers' room have dealt with dementia in our own lives, so we wanted to make that story very relatable. M'yrnn and J'onn will be facing circumstances that we feel a lot of children and their parents go through. One of the things I think is beautiful about the story is that the process of the rest of the season … will have a profound effect on J'onn. It's a very emotional journey that [he and his father are] taking together.
And of course there is the understanding and coping of the truth that Sam (Odette Annable) has to do once Lena (Katie McGrath) gets her to see it.
The fight to hold onto herself and to figure this out so she can be a mother to her daughter. She's very heroic about not succumbing to what we're realizing is the other side of her.
While this was an emotional episode, we're told that the rest of the season focuses on the Worldkillers and one question: how can Supergirl stop them and still save her friend? And if you think there is going to be a big, happy ending… the season finale title is: 'Battles Lost and Won'.
There are still eight episodes left in the season. Supergirl airs Mondays at 8 p.m. ET on the CW.
