Titans Season 1: Brenton Thwaites Thinks the "F**k Batman" Line is Important

The reaction to the first trailer of Titans, the first original series to come out on the DC Universe streaming service, garnered a very mixed reaction. There were a couple of specific reasons for the various reactions but one of them was the line in trailer where Dick Grayson, aka Robin, (Brenton Thwaites) says "fuck Batman" as he brutally fights some bad guys. Thwaites explained to Entertainment Weekly that the line was added during reshoots and that believes the line is important.

"We'd already shot that alley fight scene before, and there was no punch to it," Thwaites tells EW. "There was no real exclamation mark. I think the producers wanted something that would kind of set the tone for the whole show. … It's a show that isn't about Batman, and I think it's important for people to know that and maybe not be disappointed that they're not going to see Batman jumping from the ceiling and beating up a hundred guys, because it's not Batman, it's a story about the Titans, essentially. I feel like 'F— Batman' says that in two words."

Thwaites went on to say that the entire point of the show is to show a Robin learning to fight and become his own man away from his surrogate father figure in Batman.

"The whole point of [the show] is to tell the story of Robin breaking away from Batman and a life of fighting crime that he didn't exactly agree with, and beginning the search for his own identity and his own moral center," says Thwaites.

Executive producer Geoff Johns went on to say that this isn't the Dick Grayson we're used to but that opening himself up to new friends in the Titans will help his journey in figuring out what being raised by Batman does to a person.

"It's definitely a Dick Grayson that's more violent than people are used to. It's definitely a Dick Grayson that is struggling more than I think people are used to. … It's only by opening himself up to these new people, including Rachel most of all, that he's really gonna be able to start acknowledging [what his life with Batman did to him]."

It's really frustrating that Titans doesn't look very good because it's throwing around some really interesting ideas. Maybe those ideas will be enough to look beyond this baffling execution.

Titans, created by Greg Berlanti, Akiva Goldsman, and Geoff Johns, stars Brenton Thwaites, Anna Diop, Teagan Croft, Lindsey Gort, Alan Ritchson, Minka Kelly, and Ryan Potter.

It will release on the DC Universe streaming service beginning October 12th, 2018.
