What We Do in the Shadows S04E03 "Grand" Nadja, Baby Colin Ep: Review
This week's episode of FX's What We Do in the Shadows (S04E03 "The Grand Opening") was a fantastic segue after a wonderful start to the season, as if the wait for this season never happened. It definitely feels seamless: the storytelling, the pace, and the characters. There was so much going on in this episode but it was impossible to turn away. And even though we are only three episodes so far, it's been a very strong start to the fourth season.
This episode had a bit of everything— like a neatly served sundae with a shiny cherry on top. However, I will have to give it to Laszlo (Matt Berry) and not-so-baby-anymore Colin (Mark Proksch) for tying up this episode so wonderfully through and through. Their story was definitely my favorite throughout this episode. The way Laszlo refuses to accept and tries, by all means, to change Colin into being an interesting being, finally accepting him and the boredom that comes with him and having a very nice heart-to-heart in which he expresses it so. Their interaction there is so wholesome, and the way kiddo-Colin grabs his hand as they walk away just melted my heart. When exactly did Laszlo become my favorite?
Anyway, Nandor (Kayvan Novak) now has a wife (or wife-to-be), and after so many modifications, it seems his self-confidence has died down a bit. And of course, the next step would be to ask the Djinn (Anoop Desai) to give him a bigger "item" to work with when it comes to the genitals department. And of course, Nandor and Guillermo (Harvey Guillen) would spend hours taking notes for the Djinn and being very attentive to detail so that the wish does not get misconstrued. However, at the very last minute, Nandor messes it up for himself, and now all he can think about when using "it" is Guillermo. We saw it coming, and yet, it was still just as golden (but then, every "Nandermo" moment gets me).
On her end, Nadja (Natasia Demetriou) was been busy with her nightclub finally opening after they got The Guide (Kristen Schaal) and the wraiths to cooperate in getting the council 'turnt-up'. Saving Richie Suck (Affion Crockett) from himself and his familiar Doctor-DJ Tom (Fred Armisen), only for him to turn around and decide that stand-up comedy on opening night was his new artistic direction, was a classic What We Do in the Shadows moment. And having Baby Colin save the night with his musical theatre skills made it just that much sweeter.
It was definitely a genius-level episode. The writing is just pure fire, making the characters sassier and just more themselves than we could have imagined. I am wondering what exactly is up with Guillermo— he already mentioned he is good in the love department when Laszlo and Nadja tried pushing him into messing with The Guide. And then I was also wondering if he knew Nandor would mess up his wish due to the interaction they were having. I wonder if we will soon get more of a Guillermo-centric episode. So many questions, and so far, a very strong start to a season that is doing a nice job of expanding the show's universe while remaining true to what has made the series a success.
