Article Summary

  • Season one writing is nearing completion, with release expected in 2025.
  • Snyder teases further involvement in animation and potential news in the future.
  • 'Wytches' promises a blend of body horror, emotion, and a unique visual style.

Once again, the ever-reliable Scott Snyder is back to share an update on how things are going with Amazon's Prime Video animated adaptation of his & artist Jock's Image Comics comic book series Wytches. The reason we're jumping right into things? Because Snyder not only broke the good news that the writing team was "closing in on" finishing the first season but also dropped a tease about "some exciting news" on the animation front that might be coming our way in the future. Along with the updates, Snyder also offers a uniquely personal perspective on the time differences between the way the comics industry and the animation industry when it comes to production.

"So in the Wytches writers' room, we're closing in on the end of the first season. And one of the strangest things about working in animation (or any TV/film space), coming from comics, is how long the timeline is between the writing and the project hitting screens," Snyder wrote in the first of three tweets earlier today. "Comics, what you're writing now comes out within a year (usually within 3-6 months) of you writing it. For the 'Wytches' TV series, we got the greenlight end of '22, and it'll be out in '25, and that's considered a generally quick timeline." But though the differences are stark from a time perspective, Snyder doesn't see himself leaving the animation world anytime soon. "To be clear, I love working in animation – I want to do a lot more, actually, and should have some exciting news on that front later this year. The people, the drive for experimentation right now, bold storytelling, it's awesome. It's just wild the time difference from comics," Snyder added.

Wytches is "Present-Day Horror": Scott Snyder

In his December 1st Our Best Jackett Substack newsletter ("Newsletter #167: Season's Greetings!"), Snyder does an impressive job of explaining how a writers' room operates by taking us step-by-step through how the one he's running is shaping the season. At the end of his newsletter, Snyder offered some very interesting comparisons to give us a better sense of the vibe & tone we can expect from the animated series. It's just something we haven't seen on television." Snyder shared, "It's sort of extreme horror—real Clive Barker, John Carpenter, Paul Verhoeven too, like really body horror mixed with really high emotion, like really, I think, and I hope some resonant, substantive character work. So it's got these extremes like 'Invincible' where it's hyper-violent, hyper-scary because it's horror over here, but also hyper-emotional, and it has things that we really care about." The showrunner continued, "So it'll be a really big swing for animation because there isn't anything like it on TV. It's less genre than some of the other horror stuff that's there that I love, like I love 'Castlevania' and 'Castlevania: Nocturne.' But it's less genre. It's present-day horror, so it's just something we haven't seen on television, and visually it's going to mimic Jock's art a lot, so it's really unique."
