Lumberjanes By Noelle Stevenson Set To Sell Like Hotcakes In 2014. If Retailers Will Let It.
Yesterday, Boom! Studios PR arranged the announcement of their new comic Lumberjanes at Comics Alliance as the second series from their newest imprint, Boom! Box.
The series is basically Buffy, The Vampire Slayer meets Gravity Falls – it's about a group of best female friends at summer camp who have to protect the world by hunting supernatural critters in their spare time. It is created by Nimona's Noelle Stevenson, newcomer Grace Ellis, and Boom! editor Shannon Watters. Shortly afterwards The Mary Sue, i09, and Autostraddle re-reported the press announcement.
Not everyone will know Noelle Stevenson or her webcomic Nimona. But they should. She has a massive online following, is one of Boom's Adventure Time comics creators and Nimona was recently signed to a multiple book deal with Harper-Collins. Last year Slate named her one of their two cartoonists of the year, alongside Chris Ware.
In less than 24 hours, Noelle's Tumblr announcement of the Boom! series garnered more than 20,000 shares. For comparison sake, most of her Adventure Time tumbles get less than 10,000 and we know how popular that series is. If you search for "lumberjanes" on Twitter, you get a lot of excited people, some you'll know, some you won't. The word is growing.
Lumberjanes is going to be a popular comic book, it could well outsell Boom's other comics, yes, even Adventure Time, at least where comic stores are concerned. People are going to want to buy this comic book. Retailers, they can buy the comic from you, if you want to sell it to them. If you order enough. Or they'll go somewhere else.
If this only gets 9,000 orders, say, from direct market stores, there may be riots.
Thought it might me worth pointing out, even this far ahead.
