The Oculus Rift Will Cost At Least $300
The big question surrounding the Oculus Rift and other VR headsets, is how much are these devices are going to cost. These are premium experiences and finding out how premium the price will be is more or less the last key step in their pre-release schedule.
Well, we have a pretty good idea now at least, where the Oculus is concerned anyways. In an interview with PC Gamer, VP of Product Nate Mitchell revealed that headset will cost at least $300. When talking about pre-orders on the console, Mitchell said:
There isn't a big reason to take your money too far ahead of the device. So if I'm going to promise you something and you're going to hand me a significant amount of money or whatever it is – we all know it's going to be at least $300 – if you're going to hand me $300 today, I am not going to be excited to tell you: 'OK, in nine, 10, 12, 11 months, whatever it is, you're going to get something in return'. The longer you wait, the more you're like, 'This is obnoxious'."
This isn't a huge surprise, as this is in the ball park of the price range I was expecting. If it goes quite a bit over $300, say +$400 I would get a little worried for the future of the headset though. We will have to see.
