Marketshare Wars – All Change At DC Comics?

d1After October's direct market statistics were released, I received e-mails from certain industry folks shocked at how low DC Comics' marketshare was, and worried for the publisher. I pointed out that October saw Marvel's All-New All-Different relaunch and the market for that month saw overall sales rise by a fifth. DC's marketshare was down – a lot – but their actual sales were pretty constant. And if you take the Star Wars comics out of the equation, Marvel and DC's superhero sales have been pretty much level pegging.

Not everyone at DC Comics seems to have been convinced by this argument however. Because at the upper echelons, marketshare of the direct market is important in and of itself it seems.

I understand that over Thanksgiving, there was a radical look at a number of what are considered underperforming books at all levels, with editorial told to impose new creative teams, or switch one team for another. An All-New All-Different DC perhaps?

We've had a number of changes on a number of books recently made, part of what some dubbed the return of "Meat and potatoes" DC Comics over the "Batgirling" titles. Well, what if you tried to do both at the same time?

There are going to be some very interesting comic book solicitations coming through soon from DC… and some newsgrabbing headlines.

They're going assassinate Obama, aren't they…
