Deadpool: No Good Deed Brings A Basket Of Easter Eggs

We're about five weeks away from Easter Sunday, so it was awfully nice for Ryan Reynolds to come and hide a bunch of Easter Eggs for us this morning in the No Good Deeds short. So why did we get a Deadpool short a year before the sequel? And why is it being shown in front of the Logan movie and not after the credits like comic book movies usually do… Lets break it down. Now I'm looking at the one released on-line today, which differs some from the one running in front of Logan. Those changes include the song first playing and the appearance of Stan Lee.

We start off with Deadpool strolling along, taking his headphones off so we hear John Parr's them from St. Elmo's Fire / Man in Motion (the theatrical version has Juice Newton's Angel in the Morning) and then we see the guy getting mugged in an alley. Once Mr. Pool decides to intervene, he races for a phone booth and the Superman theme form John Williams kicks in. How did Fox get the rights to use the theme song? Well, the song is from the classic Richard Donner film… and Donner is married to Lauren Shuler Donner who is a producer on Deadpool… so she might have had some pull there. This is of course a reference to how Superman always changes in a phone booth.

On the phone booth we see graffiti saying, "Nathan Summers coming soon"… that is of course Cable, who is slated to be in the Deadpool sequel. Inside the phone booth we see the word "Hope" which is the name of the little girl from Messiah Complex, the first mutant born after House of M.

When he comes busting out of the phone booth, we switch back to the John Parr song and there are Firefly posters on the wall behind him. Firefly of course starred Nathan Fillion, who co-starred with Reynolds in Two Guys, A Girl, And A Pizza Place. Also, the word "Hope" is written on the door in the background.

Then we get the mandatory Stan Lee cameo. Nuff said.

Of course Logan is playing at the theaters, that has glass display that looks like the NBC logo above it and there is a Logan poster in the alley.

Other things that stand out – Ariana Grande and Alley Cats are both named in the grafitti. Rey is painted on the front of the theater… maybe a Star Wars reference.

The bit ends with Deadpool popping open a tub of Ben & Jerry's Cherry Garcia ice cream, that is named after the Grateful Dead's Jerry Garcia. And then we see a fast scroll showing us what seems to be a synopsis of Ernest Heminway's The Old Man and the Sea as if the synopsis was written by Deadpool.

The final thing I noticed, and I haven't seen anyone else mention, is that early in the piece we pan around Deadpool as he takes his earphones out. Behind him we see the Royal Diner, which is a restaurant frequented by the folks on Bones… a show on Fox.

Bones is coming to an end… freeing up David Boreanaz. Castle is already over, freeing up Nathan Fillion. Both of those actors would make interesting choices for Cable. Maybe they're trying to tell us something…
