Wait A Minute… Patty Jenkins is NOT Signed For The Wonder Woman Sequel Yet?

Throughout the deservedly positive media run-up to the debut of Wonder Woman over the past couple of weeks, there have been lots of high notes that have given fans reason to be hopeful about a bright future for the DCEU, and one of them was this May 31 THR article that seemed to be saying — yes! — both Patty Jenkins and Gal Gadot are already under contract for the Wonder Woman sequel.

And if it all goes according to plan, Jenkins is more than ready to return to the character for a contemporary-set Wonder Woman sequel (she and Gadot are contractually committed to a second film).

That spun off the customary 500 posts dissecting that sentence down to the atomic level and extrapolating it into… not just a universe of a Wonder Woman future, but a multiverse of many possible futures. And certainly, Jenkins herself has obviously thought quite a lot about the sequel, naturally enough, and has started talking about it.

But now comes word from THR again, that… well, one presumes it's going to happen, but it's not done quite yet.  I might raise more of an eyebrow at that, but Borys Kit is pretty much the gold standard for film industry reporters — he doesn't speculate, he's careful, he has the direct sources. So I'm going to presume this version is accurate:

While star Gal Gadot has an option in place for Wonder Woman 2 as part of her overall deal to appear in several DC movies, Warner Bros. executives enlisted Jenkins for just one film, a decision that could end up costing the studio millions of dollars if Jenkins' reps drive a hard bargain for her to return.

So, yes.  That was a tactical error on Warner Bros' part. Still, I think we can presume the chances that a deal doesn't get done are pretty small, and diminishing daily.  Now let's hope they get that done soon so I can get back to speculating on which villains are going to be in Wonder Woman 2…
