James Gunn Has Finished The First Draft Of The Treatment For 'Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3'

james-gunn-149282James Gunn has been a little busy in the last few weeks. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 has only been in theater for about six weeks and maybe a little more since Gunn announced that he would be making a third movie. He must be feeling inspired because while speaking at E3 this weekend Gunn announced that the first draft of the treatment was done according to Newsarama.

"I'm writing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and I finished the first draft of the treatment yesterday. I'm excited about it. I feel really great about it."

Now, if you're reading that and wondering specifically what a "treatment" is as far as movie writing goes we jumped on google for you.

A film treatment (or simply treatment) is a piece of prose, typically the step between scene cards (index cards) and the first draft of a screenplay for a motion picture, television program, or radio play. It is generally longer and more detailed than an outline (or one-page synopsis), and it may include details of directorial style that an outline omits. Treatments read like a short story, but are told in the present tense and describe events as they happen.

So it's not like Gunn has a completed word for word script ready but a version of the plot of the movie told like a short story. Everyone has to start somewhere but as Gunn talked to the audience he lamented that he had hit a block; there was apparently a continuity error.

"Now, Marvel Canon – MCU – is crazy … I did something in [Guardians of the Galaxy] where it was in the background but it was distinctly there, and people know that it's there … I have a really good storytelling reason for breaking the canon, and I stayed up last night figuring out if I'm gonna do it or not. I still don't know."

Guardians of the GalaxyGunn went on to poll the audience as to whether or not it's okay for him to break his own continuity which they seemed in favor of. Fellow panelist Neil deGrasse Tyson asked Gunn to reveal the detail he was talking about and why he didn't say what the detail was he did say where we could find it.

"In the first movie there is the mugshot sequence where the characters go through and they're going through the mugshots and having their picture taken. And the Nova Corps has information about each of the characters coming up on their machinery," Gunn explained. "Those things are something that your average viewer doesn't see at all. But there's a lot of background I put into those things about who they've worked with, where they are from, what's going on. And it's one of those things that I'm thinking about changing."

There were plenty of details in there and while some people are saying it could be the Gamora being listed as the "last survivor of the Zehoberei people" there could be another idea. Drax's daughter is a part of Marvel comics and she does become a hero in her own right called Moondragon. Drax's daughter actually being alive somehow would be a huge deal to Drax as a character. However, that isn't a hidden detail so maybe not that.

At the moment we have no idea what Gunn is talking about and we likely won't know for several years. It's good that Gunn is fired up about the third movie; at least we know he's not in danger of burning out anytime soon.
